Golubac

At the place where the Danube is widest, there is the magnificent Golubac Fortress. The Romans, protecting the northern borders of the empire in the first century AD, built this fortification on both sides of the Danube, on the site of today's town of Golubac, called Vikus Kupa. There are various legends about the name of the city, and the most famous one is about the beautiful Princess Golubina who refused to marry a Turkish pasha.
