Charuga

Charuga is a film about the utopia of social equality and social justice, about a paradise on earth where everyone will have as much as they need. The greed for money and power, however, quickly shattered all dreams, and Charuga transformed from a revolutionary and a romantic hajduk into a cruel robber and murderer.

The beginning of the film takes us back to the early dawn of February 27th 1925, in the yard of the Osijek prison, where over 3000 curious people gathered to attend the hanging of "Slavonian Robin Hood" - Jovo Stanisavljević Čaruga. The trial of Charuga was in the center of media attention for days, tickets for hanging were sold out 15 days in advance, and the actors of the Osijek theater did not want to miss such an important event: an honorary box was prepared for them to "learn" how to die.

The newspaper noted that Charuga's last words were: "This isn't that scary. I'm leaving cheerfully."
