A German by origin, and a Serb at heart. So contemporaries spoke with excitement about George Weifert. The people loved him because he was a great humanist. He founded the first steam beer factory in the Balkans in Belgrade. He is considered a pioneer of Serbian mining and energy because he invested his enormous wealth in the development of that. He went down in history as the founder of the National Bank, various associations, and charitable societies, and he is also remembered as the governor of the National Bank who managed to preserve the value of the dinar and strengthen the economic growth of Serbia in the most difficult times.
